Info for New Bowlers

Welcome to Borough Park Bowls Club!

We are thrilled to have you as new members.

Lawn bowls is a fantastic sport that combines skill, strategy and social interaction.  And sometimes a tiny bit of luck!

To help you get started and make the most of your experience, here is a comprehensive guide to the basics and etiquette of lawn bowls:

Introduction to Lawn Bowls:

Lawn bowls is a precision sport where players roll biased balls (bowls) on a carefully maintained grass or artificial green to get as close as possible to a smaller target ball called the jack.

The objective is to score points by having your bowls closer to the jack than your opponents' bowls.

Equipment:

Each player is provided with a set of bowls, usually four in number.

Bowls come in various sizes and weights, so choose the ones that feel comfortable for you.

Wear lawn bowling shoes to protect the green.

Basic Rules:

Always stand on the mat to deliver the bowl and stay within the boundaries of the rink.

The skip (team captain) directs the game and stands at the opposite end of the rink to guide the team's strategy.

Players from both teams take turns to play; the team with the closest bowl to the jack wins the end and scores points.

Don't step on the green when others are playing and remain quiet when a player is about to bowl.

Etiquette:

Shake hands with opponents before and after a game; it is a sign of good sportsmanship.

Avoid unnecessary noise or movement while others are playing.

Don't touch bowls in play unless it is your job to chalk them.

Compliment good shots from your teammates and opponents.

Basic Techniques:

Hold the bowl with a relaxed grip, and use a smooth, controlled delivery.

Develop a consistent stance and approach to improve accuracy.

Pay attention to the bias of your bowls and adjust your line accordingly.

Practice:

Regular practice will help improve your skills and understanding of the game.

Ask experienced players for tips and advice.

Getting Involved:

You can participate in club events, social games, and tournaments to meet other members and enhance your experience.

Volunteering for club activities to contribute to the community is a great way to become more involved.

Club Resources:

Familiarise yourself with the club's facilities, events calendar, and communication channels.

Feel free to approach club officials or fellow members if you have any questions or need assistance.

Remember, lawn bowls is not just about competition; it's about camaraderie and having fun.

Embrace the learning process, and soon you'll be enjoying this wonderful sport to the fullest.
